Handmaids of the Lord - Women's Household

As handmaids of the Lord, we are called to do the will of God in our lives. We strive for unity as sisters in Christ and for growth in individual prayer. We want to fall so in love with Jesus that His love will overflow to all aspects of our lives and the lives of others. To do this we give our lives to our most Blessed Mother and try to emulate her pure and undying love for our Lord.

We strive for unity as sisters in Christ. “Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace; one body and one spirit…” (Ephesians 4:2-4) No matter where people are at in their personal relationship with the Lord, we want to accept them and encourage them to grow.

Personal prayer is our foundation. “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) We are called to faithfulness in daily prayer. Through prayer everything is possible.

God calls us as a household to evangelize. In order to do this, we must focus on our relationship with Jesus and fall in love with Him. We do this through personal prayer. We want Jesus to penetrate and possess our whole being so that our lives may only be a radiance of His. We want Jesus to shine through us and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel His presence in our soul. We want those around us to look up and see no longer us but only Jesus, representing a visible expression of Him on this earth. We want to draw others to Christ through our example, prayer, and sacrifice. This is how we witness Christ. “In everything you do act without grumbling or arguing; prove yourselves innocent and straightforward, children of God beyond reproach in the midst of a twisted and depraved generation among whom you shine like the stars in the sky.” (Philippians 2:14-15)

A handmaid is someone who does the will of God. Our Blessed Mother said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) We desire to do the will of the Lord as Mary did, in complete trust and submission. We want to imitate Mary’s compassion, humility, simplicity, and gentleness. Like Mary, we want to be so pleasing to God that He may make our hearts His resting place.

With the support and encouragement of one another, we live out this covenant through our commitments. Keeping the following commitments is essential to accomplishing our mission as a household. Daily, we commit ourselves to at least 15 minutes of personal prayer; weekly we gather together for group prayer, praise and worship, Mass, Saturday Lord’s Day celebration, share group, and a business meeting. These commitments are the basis of our community life together. The coordinator must be informed if a commitment is going to be missed. We also spiritually adopt another woman on campus each week and within household we have prayer partners.

This household has a special devotion to our Blessed Mother. She is our model and we place ourselves in her hands by going through the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary according to Saint Louis de Montfort.
